Saturday In Gothenburg

We slept in after all the midsummer celebration yesterday and then hurried down to the dock for the 10:37 ferry to Salthomen, a 22 minute ride. We then hopped on the tram to the center of Gothenburg to explore for the day.

Mike enjoying his coffe on the ferry. The forecast was for rain, but it ended up being a nice day.
After we got off the tram we stopped at this cafe for more coffee and a pastry. We were still worried about the rain, so we bought umbrellas in a 7-Eleven store, just in case.
We walked over to Gothenburg University and through part of the campus. There wasn't much activity there. Either the students are done for the summer or they left town for the holiday. We did see one group camped out in tents on campus, demonstrating for the homeless.
This is the Oscar Fedrik Church, erected in the 1890's. It is named after King Oscar II.
At the top of Avenyn at Götaplatsen is the statue of Poseidon, with Roxanne waving. The sculptor,Carl Milles, was born in Sweden and later was a sculptor in residence at Cranbrook Academy of Arts in Bloomfield Hills. Michigan. This is near where Mike lived through junior high and high school.
Here we are! We don't know how much we had walked by this point in the day, but much more was to come.
This is the local opera house. With the use of our iPad we were able to find the bus/tram route to take to get there from across town. After a slight detour due to operator error (we missed the stop) we made it to the wharf.
This is a sculpture outside the opera house. You can see a "tall ship" in the background. After this we headed back to Styrso.
