Ålesund

it's Tuesday, so our second stop is Ålesund. It is the most northern town of our voyage. sunrise is at 3:45am and sunset is at 11:40pm(23:40). adjusting to daylight is a challenge as you think it is still daytime and continuously. Ålesund is a much bigger town, about 45,000 people living across 7 different islands-connected by bridges and ferries. we first searched for a sim card- which we discovered was going to be a problem in Norway or at least on the western coast. The attraction in Ålesund is the top mountain or overlook that you can view the city/islands.

Ålesund burned down in 1904, most of the houses and structures were wood. There is an interesting history how they rebuilt, but when they did it was required that stone and brick be used and also in the style of art nouveau.
roxanne's favorite house painted in bright green. Lots of rounded, arched windows and scrolling decoratives
some of the building had the motifs painted in bright colors.
Mike at the harbor.
From the harbor, looking down an inlet between the islands lined with boats and restaurants.
we chose to visit the aquarium, which is at the end of the main island. We took the shuttle bus out there for about an hour. Lots of fish! And some puffins.
Next we took a small tourist train up to the top of Mt. Aksla for a great view of the city and the surrounding area.
This is the enter of the city. You can see a small part of the aft of our ship on the upper left.
Roxanne from the viewing platform on Mt. Aksla.
Another picture of Roxanne from Mt. Aksla, looking a little nervous about the height.
You can see the train we took and the beginning of the 418 steps to the bottom. We took the train back down.
